Literacy and Composition Lecturer

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) was established in August 2018 and is the newest School within the CUNY system. The mission of the School is to: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs of labor and urban studies to working adults and traditional-age students; 2) expand educational opportunities to working adults while meeting the workforce development needs of the City and State, and 3) serving the labor and broader community by conducting research, offering leadership development programs, hosting forums and national conferences, and publishing national labor journals to promote debate on issues critical to labor and working-class communities.

SLU seeks a Literacy and Composition Lecturer in the Urban Studies department and will report to the Chair of the department.

The Literacy and Composition Lecturer will have primary responsibility for teaching, program planning, and academic oversight of pre-college programs at SLU. The lecturer may contribute to the overall academic development of students at SLU (including advising) in the areas

of literacy, reading, and writing composition at the school.

Students participating in the College Now program at the School of Labor and Urban Studies are a part of a comprehensive collaborative initiative between the City University of New York and the New York City Department of Education. They are earning college credits towards an Urban Experience undergraduate certificate while completing high school. Students in SLU?s College Academy are high school students at partnering alternative high schools and earn an undergraduate certificate in Community Leadership. Pre-college classes are held both at SLU and on site at partner high schools.

The lecturer position has an annual 24-hour teaching credit workload, and the Lecturer will typically teach three courses per semester with possible administrative reassigned time.

Additional departmental and school service work is required. Lecturers receive a certificate of continuous employment (contractual tenure) upon their sixth-year reappointment.

The appointment will start in the Fall 2025semester.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Teaching

o Develop and deliver courses related to literacy and composition, which may include foundational courses with specialized themes in labor and urban studies.

o Use a variety of instructional methods, including lectures, interactive activities, and technology, to engage and educate students effectively.

o Assess and evaluate student performance, provide feedback, and support students? academic progress.

Programmatic responsibilities

o Take on leadership roles in program development, planning, and review.

o Assist in the supervision of pre-college adjunct faculty.

o Oversee the design and revision of course curriculum, ensuring alignment with best practices in literacy and composition education.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

Preferred Qualifications:

? A Master?s degree in a relevant field such as English, Education, Literacy Education, Writing Studies, Writing, or a closely related discipline.

? Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate level, with evidence of effective pedagogical methods.

? Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and within the academic community and demonstrated experience teaching a diverse student body.

? Knowledge of current educational technologies and their integration into teaching.

? Evidence of readiness to assume leadership roles in program administration, oversight, planning, and development.

? Experience in curriculum development and assessment.

? Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with students and colleagues

? A passion for improving literacy and composition skills in students.

*While experience with pre-college populations or high-school teaching is not required for the position, such experience will be favorably considered

COMPENSATION

The salary range is $79,170-$92,878 commensurate with qualifications, experience, and education.
