Job Description and Duties

This advertisement will run until the position is filled with the following cutoff dates for review.  The first cutoff date will be May 27, 2025 and then the 1 st and 15 th of every month.

The Climate Indicators and Site Assessment Section (CISAS) within the Air and Site Assessment and Climate Indicators Branch provides scientific evaluations, research and technical work for CalEPA, its boards and departments, other state and local programs, nongovernmental organizations, and other entities on issues relating to environmental challenges that impact human or ecological health.

CISAS comprises two main programs:

  1. The Contaminated Sites Program and the Climate Change Indicators Program. The Contaminated Sites Program provides technical consultation and support on human and ecological health risk assessments to California’s Regional Water Quality Control Boards and local governmental agencies overseeing the investigation and cleanup of contaminated sites.
  2. The Climate Change Indicators Program conducts research to prepare periodic reports on indicators that track observed changes in climate, the human factors that influence these changes (its “drivers”), and the impacts of these changes on California’s physical environment, ecosystems and human health.

CISAS is also responsible for other activities, including updating a list of potentially hazardous art and craft materials, and providing toxicological expertise in support of other OEHHA programs, as requested (including programs assessing human and ecological risks from environmental pollutants accidentally released into water or soil, from toxins associated with harmful algal blooms, and from agents used against invasive pests).

Under general direction of the Supervising Toxicologist (Managerial), Chief, ASACIB, the Chief of CISAS supervises a section of Associate/Staff Toxicologists (Specialist) and Environmental Scientists/Senior Environmental Scientists (Specialist) and provides expert scientific direction and management of the Section’s programs, coordinating as appropriate with other parts of the department and other state, local, federal and Tribal government, academia and research institutions.
