FLSA Status: Partially Exempt
This is specialized law enforcement and limited supervisory work providing protection for civilian aviation passengers, visitors, aircraft, and facilities. Work responsibilities include providing security protection, ensuring FAA Certification compliance, writing and maintaining records and reports, working with outside law enforcement agencies, assisting and giving information to the public, and supervising Airport Police Officers. Employees in this class exercise supervision over Airport Police Officers on an assigned shift and report to the Airport Police Sergeant.
Provides security protection for civilian aviation aircraft, passengers, and maintains airport equipment.
Coordinates compliance with FAA Airport Certification rules, regulations, and procedures related to runway, lighting, airport grounds, and/or airfield layout.
Writes and maintains records and reports , such as Bomb Threat-call Checklist, Police Desk Blotter Sheet, Offense/Incident Report, Citation, and Aircraft Removal Release Form.
Works with and assists City, State, and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies in performing police duties.
Assists and provides information to the public.
Supervises up to six Airport Police Officers on an assigned shift.
Knowledge of Rules of Criminal Procedure (Title 13) to include arrest laws and procedures to gather evidence, facilitate apprehension of criminals, and present testimony.
Knowledge of applicable motor vehicle laws governing moving violations to stop or ticket motorists.
Knowledge of crime prevention patrol procedures , including security checks, identification of stolen vehicles, and drug transport detection.
Knowledge of alarm locations at various gates and buildings, including checking, disarming, and resetting alarms.
Knowledge of the Airport Police Department’s Standard Operating Procedures , including handling bomb threats, hijackings, lost and found items, and when to contact other law enforcement agencies.
Knowledge of the airport layout , including terminals and perimeter grounds to facilitate responses and patrols.
Knowledge of domestic violence laws , including warrantless arrests and protection of individuals involved.
Knowledge of different crime types , including felonies, misdemeanors, and violations to ensure lawful arrests.
Knowledge of Airport Police Department personnel policies , including chain of command, leave, overtime, work assignments, and dress codes.
Knowledge of search and seizure laws , including criteria for probable cause, legal searches, and warrant requirements.
Knowledge of law enforcement equipment , including pistols, batons, mace, radios, and flashlights.
Knowledge of response procedures for aircraft accidents , including setting up security corridors and coordinating with responding agencies.
Skill in firearms use to meet the Montgomery Airport Police Department's Policy and Standards.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing , preparing clear and accurate reports.
Ability to supervise assigned employees , ensuring completion of tasks and compliance with policies.
Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies , including handling irate individuals.
Ability to drive patrol vehicles and operate security systems.
Physical ability to walk for extended periods to patrol terminal and grounds.
Physical ability to exert force to restrain suspects and push vehicles.
Physical ability to climb fences and stairs for inspections and apprehensions.
Physical ability to run in response to emergencies.
Physical ability to lift objects , such as injured persons and equipment.
Physical ability to enter and exit small spaces , such as vehicles and confined areas.
Must submit to a 5-year employment background check to satisfy FAA requirements.
Must be available to work nights, shifts, and weekends.
Must meet the State of Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission requirements.
Must have at least 12 months’ experience as an Airport Police Officer with the Montgomery Airport Authority.
